I’d rather Play, than Press Play

There’s a plain honesty to live music that it can’t be faked.  When an artist walks on stage with just an instrument and their voice there’s a risk involved — and that risk is what makes a performance come to life.

Playing live, unassisted, requires control of dynamics, timing and tone.  Musicians must listen — not only to themselves, but to the other players, the room and the audience. Mistakes happen.  How a performer reacts to a missed note, a vocal crack or a tempo wobble can turn vulnerability into something memorable.

Honey Badger Open Mic events want to push every performer forward to connect with the audience.  It is for this reason that we have now made a ruling that ALL performances MUST BE LIVE.

The use of backing tracks and singing to backing music are now options we don’t allow. All music must be played live, with no exceptions.  Our venues and audiences have asked for this and express a far higher level of appreciation and connection.  When we see, hear and feel music the music being played the experience is far far greater.  As a host I absolutely believe that this will be for the better for your experience at our open mics.

If you sing covers but can’t play an instrument, please come along and we will try and facilitate someone to back you up live.  If you are an original artist and have created backing tracks, please bring along your band or other musicians to play as we can easily cater for groups.  If you don’t have a band, feel free to come along and talk to us and we will try and find people to play with you, if not on the night, then at another open mic in the near future.

“Play rather than press play “is now the new mantra for our open mics, music played live makes music played for real.
